"No matter how things change, what makes us wholesome never will."
Life is funny sometimes.  You set out with a plan.... how you think your life, your family will look and grow. And then just like that, life takes you in a different direction & down a new path.  Sometimes the change is welcome. Sometimes it is a kick to the gut and takes your breath away, leaving you with doubt about what your new plan for life will look like.
I have experienced both such changes that sent me in new directions in my life and helped shape how I now define family. What I now value as wholesome.

And today, I am reflecting on this as I celebrate National Step Family Day with my family with a little help from Honey Maid snacks...

After my son's father and I divorced, it kind of sent our life into a tailspin.  It took me almost 10 years before I finally remarried, and my wonderful husband became the stepfather to my son that I had always hoped for. Their relationship with each other blows me away almost every day.
They can sit and chat about anything and everything, and love spending time together.

Not that I should be shocked by his easy and close relationship with my son.  My husband is the only child from his parents' marriage, but they entered into that marriage with six children between them from their previous marriages.  The terms "step" and "half" were never used in their home nor among them. He grew up knowing that this was his family. Different, maybe. But complete and whole.

When my husband and I had our daughter, my son was 13 years old.  I worried about the age difference between the two... Would they be close? Would they ever have anything in common?
All of those questions and doubt have disappeared over the past two years as I have watched these two growing together.  The love and adoration they have for each other knows no age gap or genetic make-up.
They are family- wholesome and complete.

The person I was over 15 years ago would have never imagined that my concept of family, of what my family should look like would change so much.

But here we are, together.  And I wouldn't have it any other way. :)
This is my family.
We were not broken and then pieced together.
We are wholesome.
We are one.
