Some of you all may remember the little trip to Birmingham, Alabama I took back in March to tour the Southern Living headquarters and to indulge in some delicious authentic southern food.  That quick southern getaway happened to be sponsored by the good folks at Delta Faucet

During our short visit to Birmingham, we visited an amazing southern soul food restaurant called Saw's Juke Joint for dinner. Folks, we were spoiled. From deep fried okra to delicious smoked wings to BBQ pulled pork with all the fixings, we were really treated to a full taste of southern cuisine. But I am pretty sure my favorite part of that entire meal was how it ended- with an amazing deconstructed banana pudding. ;)

We were served a platter with small bowls filled with homemade banana pudding, banana slices, vanilla wafers, and fresh whipped cream. From there, we could construct our individual banana puddings as we wished. Some of us bloggers created little works of culinary art and showed off our food styling skills. And some of us just layered everything together and dug in! (Ahem... guilty of that here.)

And that dreamy deconstructed banana pudding provided the inspiration for the tasty twist on a classic southern dessert that I am sharing with you all today- a Banana Pudding Dessert Pizza! Banana Pudding Dessert Pizza

by Frugal Foodie Mama
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 12-15 minutes
Ingredients (serves 8)
For the vanilla wafer pizza crust
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1/2 cup vanilla wafer crumbs (I used my food processor.)
    • 1 packet (1/4 oz) rapid rise dry yeast
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
    • 1/2 cup very warm water
    • 2 tsp unsalted butter, melted
For the banana pudding frosting topping
    • 1 (3.56oz) box banana instant pudding mix
    • ½ cup cold milk
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla
    For the homemade whipped cream
    • 1 cup cold heavy cream
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla
    • Banana Chips & whole vanilla wafers, for topping
    Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
Whisk together the flour, vanilla wafer crumbs, yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add the very warm water and butter. Mix until well blended, about 1 minute. Gradually add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Dough should form a ball and will be slightly sticky.

Knead on a floured surface, adding additional flour if necessary, until smooth and elastic, about 4 minutes.
Roll dough on a floured surface to a 12-inch circle & then place in a greased pizza pan or cast iron skillet.
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is slightly golden brown. Allow the crust to cool completely on a wire rack.

While the crust is baking, prepare the banana pudding frosting topping. Whisk together the pudding mix and milk in a small bowl. Set aside in the fridge until thickened, about 3 minutes.
Meanwhile beat the butter in a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer until light and creamy. Add in the vanilla & thickened pudding. Blend until smooth and creamy.
Add in the powdered sugar & blend again.

Once the crust has cooled, evenly spread the banana pudding frosting over the crust. Press banana chips into the pudding frosting topping.

Right before serving, prepare the whipped cream. Freeze the bowl and beaters in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before preparing the whipped cream. Pour the cold heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla into the chilled bowl. Beat with the chilled beaters until the mixture is thickened, creamy, and medium peaks form.
Spread the fresh whipped cream over the center of the banana pudding topped pizza. Garnish the whipped cream with more banana chips. Press whole vanilla wafers all along the outside edge of the crust. Slice and serve immediately, or wrap and keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

You can store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
    Enjoy!

Feel free to enjoy this Banana Pudding Dessert Pizza in the southern genteel fashion of using a plate and fork, or cut yourself a slice and eat as you would any pizza- by hand! :)

I have to brag just a tad bit and tell you all that this dessert pizza turned out absolutely amazing. Just a word of caution though- it is rich, but addictive! :)

Now I did use dried banana chips for this dessert pizza instead of fresh banana slices, but you can feel free to use fresh if you expect the whole thing to be gobbled up the day that you make it. I decided to use banana chips because I knew it would be in my fridge for a couple of days, and I am not a fan of brown, mushy banana slices.

If you read through the recipe instructions above, you might have noticed that I mentioned that the pizza dough would end up being a little sticky. Thanks to my friends at Delta Faucet I just refer to those sticky pizza dough hands as a #Happimess now. ;) And why? Because washing up after is a breeze with my new Delta Touch2O faucet...

Let's be honest- is there anything worse than having really messy hands and knowing you have to turn on a faucet to wash your hands? You know that whatever sticky mess happens to be on your hands will end up on the knobs of the faucet, and you then you will have to clean those up as well after you are done washing your hands. You can say goodbye to that little messy problem when you win a Delta Touch2O faucet in the giveaway I am hosting below! :)

How does the Touch2O work? It's touch technology detects human touch much like your cell phone or tablet does. Just a quick tap from your wrist anywhere along the faucet head will turn the water on. You longer have to turn the knobs with your messy hands to get the water on! Genius, you all...
