While I know that the turkey, and all the sides, and the pumpkin pie are the stars of that big turkey day coming up next week, I do firmly believe that a Thanksgiving dinner menu is not complete until a fall festive cocktail has been added to the mix. ;) Usually we pick up a bottle of wine that will pair well with turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner, but this year I am changing things up just a bit. We will still be sticking with the wine, but I am jazzing it up with fresh pomegranate, apples, and lots of spice in this easy to make sangria recipe that I am sharing with you all today.

I know most people think of sangria as just a warm weather thing, but why should summer get all the boozy fun of this delicious cocktail? The fall season offers such wonderful flavors that lend themselves perfectly to a good homemade sangria. Since I have been on such a pomegranate kick lately, I really made it the star of this sangria with the addition of pomegranate vodka, pomegranate juice, and fresh pomegranate seeds. The apple cider, spiced rum, and cinnamon smooths out the entire cocktail making for easy sipping for your Thanksgiving feast next week... :)

Ingredients (Serves 6)
  • 1 bottle of apple wine, pinot grigio, or moscato
  • 2 1/2 cups of apple cider
  • 1 cup club soda
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate juice (can sub cranberry pomegranate juice for a more affordable option)

  • 1/3 cup pomegranate flavored vodka
  • 2 apples, cored & sliced
  • 1/3 cup fresh pomegranate seeds
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks
Instructions
In a large pitcher, combine all the ingredients above. Give it a really good stir, and then chill in the fridge for at least one hour before serving. Pour into glasses filled with ice being sure to add some of the fresh apple slices and pomegranate seeds to each glass. Garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick, if desired. Refrigerate any leftovers, and be sure to consume within 48 hours.
Enjoy!

While you can use just about any white wine, get your hands on a bottle of apple wine for this sangria if you can. We happened to have an apple wine on hand from a recent trip to our favorite apple orchard, and it was amazing in this cocktail. And if you can't find pomegranate flavored vodka, feel free to use regular vodka instead. The pomegranate juice and fresh seeds will lend plenty of sweet pomegranate flavor to the sangria.
