Like most girls in grade school, my youngest is obsessed with all things unicorn. So it didn't surprise me in the slightest when she told me that she wanted a unicorn themed party for her 7th birthday last month. A magical unicorn themed party with all things purple & a fancy unicorn birthday cake.
Funny enough, I had a purple unicorn party myself for my 8th birthday many, many years ago. Maybe her obsession with unicorns & the color purple is hereditary? ;)
As soon as my daughter has settled on a birthday party theme each year, I get to work browsing Amazon for party supplies & decorations. You can find just about everything on Amazon, and you just can't beat the two day free shipping with Amazon Prime.
I was going to order her unicorn cake from a fancy local bakery, but my mom convinced me that we could make one together (I did the baking; she did the decorating). You can find tons of unicorn cake toppers & decorations on Amazon.
I ultimately decided to go with this one because it also came with a birthday banner, a unicorn headband for the birthday girl, & cupcake toppers & wrappers.
I raided the dollar spot at my local Target to find all of the goodies for the favor bags. Luckily, they had quite a few unicorn themed items available then as part of their Valentine's Day items. I filled the favor bags with lip gloss, pencils, little notepads, & unicorn shaped erasers.
The options for unicorn themed invitations are pretty much endless on Amazon, so you are sure to find the right one for your little one's party on there. We went with ones that had a decent amount of purple on them.

They each took turns wearing the unicorn horn headband & tossing the inflatable rings at each other. Definitely well worth the less than 7 bucks I paid for it! :)

I divided the cake batter into 3 different bowls, and then colored each of them with pink, teal, & purple food gel coloring. It is important to use the gel colors because they come out more vibrant than the regular liquid food coloring.
After spraying two 9-inch round cake pans with baker's spray, I started pouring each color of batter in small globs alternating among the 3 colors into each pan.

Once I had poured all of the batters into each pan evenly, I gently swirled the colors just a little with a butter knife. You don't want to swirl too much or the colors will start to mix together completely.
My mom did all of the frosting & decorating of the cake, so I don't have very many tips or pointers as far as decorating the unicorn cake goes. She did use this vanilla buttercream frosting recipe that I made. And she also used a rotating cake turntable to make decorating the cake easier.
